Natasa Torbica
State: Wisconsin
City of Residence: Hales Corners, Wisconsin
Country of origin: Bosnia and Herzegovina
Arrival in the U.S.: 1998
Ms. Natasa Torbica was resettled to Wisconsin with her husband and children in 1998 after being forced to flee Yugoslavia in the early 1990’s due to the ongoing conflict. She had to send her children to safety in Serbia first, and was later reunited with them in Belgrade. While her family struggled to find work in Serbia, Ms. Torbica notes that she felt fortunate that she and her husband were able to find work less than three months after arriving in Wisconsin. She began volunteering with her resettlement agency, Lutheran Social Services, and eventually began working there as a case manager. Ms. Torbica is most proud of serving people in her community of all backgrounds after arriving in the United States, including refugees, asylees and the general population.
